Joey Cheek is the founder and CEO of SmartSolar.org. He is a two-time USA Olympic gold-medalist in speed skating (2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games and 2006 Turin Winter Games) and a Princeton University graduate, where he studied economics and Chinese.
Cheek has always been passionate about philanthropy. He is the co-founder and president of Team Darfur, an international coalition of athletes committed to raising awareness about and bringing an end to the crisis in Darfur, Sudan. Cheek donated his USOC gold medal winnings, along with other competition winnings, to Right to Play, an athlete-driven international humanitarian organization, encouraging other athletes to follow in his footsteps.
“My wife and I recently had a son,” he shared. “I know we’re making a small dent in this problem, and a lot more needs to be done, but I couldn’t stand the thought that through my inaction, he might live in a less and less hospitable world.”
